So I am on Reddit and there is this, "if you want to succeed on Youtube, do this" type of thread.

I read it and it was a bit on the ridiculous side, but whatever. Honestly some of the things seemed a bit unrealistic, but there was one thing that got me.

Did not talk about audio much, and that is very important.

I mentioned Blue Yeti microphones as a good choice if you arent looking to break the bank.

Someone posted "they are awful" you should use XYZ microphone.

So I called him out, why is it awful.

"Just what I heard... too many people say this..."

Then I proceeded to tell him the opposite, he was the first to say this. Amazon reviews for all of their mics are about 4.5 or better at about 100K reviews. Where are they awful.

Haven't got a response back. Wonder why?

So my point? Just because you like a certain brand better, or never used a certain product does not make it awful. It only makes it unknown and different to you. Don't be a douchecanoe and bad mouth it, it makes you look uneducated and salty.

so - for context - I own 'professional' microphones worth between £25 and £1600 per unit and have in excess of 70. Professional deserves the ' ' as the real value of a mic is how it's used, not it's price point. A great engineer will get a good sound with budget mics. see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoO_6HqrfYw

And I don't like the Blue Yeti. But i'm not going to say awful - as clearly better than most built in microphones.  http://recordinghacks.com/microphones/Blue-Microphones/Yeti has some responses - if you care about them then you'll say it's not the best, if it's the first time seeing one then it's better than you need. As for price the C-1U from Behringer is probably a great option for a "above average" mic on a budget.

Before Covid my company had a podcast room, 4 mics, sound board, etc, whatever and a monster computer. The set up was easily 4K or more for everything.

The Mics were really good, I don't know the brand off hand. After a year or so, one of the mic's went down (someone was ****ing around with it too much) and my co-podcaster at the time brought in his Blue Yeti to use until we got the other repaired.

Honestly, I am not an expert in audio, but we didn't skip a beat. I edited the podcast and there was no outstanding differences between any of them. Now mind you, I do not have an ear for that, or more exact I do not have the experience and training to have an ear for that. So take this as you will:

It was for my paranormal podcast, and it wasn't meant to be some over the top audio experience. But it all sounded really good, and there was little to no difference in the recordings from each mic.

I am in no way saying they are superior to XYZ brand, but they hold their own pretty good. Especially in a pinch. It is probably why I tend to defend them a bit more because of the experience I have had with them. Plus I am a 7-8 year user and have used it many times for voiceovers and such. Would other mic's be better? Probably, but since no one has complained yet, and we have returning clients for the same kind of work... I am not going to try and fix something that is not broken.

Appreciate the response!

Yeah some of the internet arguments get well out of hand. It should be about discussion and sharing experience, not evangelism!

I've got a Zoom H1n microphone so just trying to work out best way of using that. I've also ordered a purple panda lapel mic - by no means the best option but very good value for money considering what it comes with. And certainly adequate for my current use case.

I think a lot of it comes down to that. Hell if you have disposable income, you can buy high grade of just about anything, within reason of course. If audio is important to you, go beyond the Blue Yeti and the like.  8)

But many people do not have disposable income so they have to watch what they spend their money on.

Never heard of purple panda, I have some remote mics (my work calls them that for some reason?) that I have used and they are "meh" at best. Have to do post work to get some of the background noise out. But if you like purple panda, let me know, I will look into them for my work.

Purple panda isn't awesome but it's adaquete. The Rhode ones are better but purple yeti lav mic is half the price.

I picked up a Samson Q2U mic which is perfectly fine for my needs.  Most of my videos just use the audio from my GoPro and then I use the Samson for mostly if I'm narrating my drone videos.
