Just wondering what people prefer as I don't do commentary but have a half decent microphone and an ok webcam.
I have attempted commentary on a gaming video but found that I had a lot of trouble.
As when I tried thinking of something funny to say I kept dying as I was too distracted and when I was concentrating on the game I realized that I actually forgot to say anything at all.
Also I play a lot of children safe games and tend to swear a lot when losing so I have to be careful with sometimes having a younger audience.

I don't know if it would be a better idea to record commentary after finishing the game then overlaying the webcam recording to the video.

Any feedback appreciated

IMO

Always commentary. Always. That will separate you from every other channel. Meaning, if you just put up gameplay, that is what 1M other channels can do. If you comment on it, anecdotes, puns, stories... it suddenly becomes very uniquely you.

You dont necessarily have to use a webcam either, so I wouldn't even introduce that at first.

My best suggestion is play a Skyrim, Oblivion, Fallout 4 or the like. Reason? It is not balls to the wall action, you have dialogue coming in at you from the game that you can play around with and there are tons of options to work with. When you are playing something that is intense and non stop action, it can be, no strike that, it IS very hard to comment on it while everything is happening.

Just my 2 cents.

You can see it in full action here... the highlights of my game play is me being a dumbass.

Also doesn't help that I live in shared house with idiots that think when you have music on everybody else in the house wants to listen as well.
Have tried asking politely can you turn it down a bit which usually ends with the music being turned up even louder and his bedroom door being opened wider to make it that bit louder.

Can't wait until I can get my own place then I can record anytime I want without fear of copyright strikes.

Commentary - absolutely. It's very hard to do while playing - so do it by voice over after when editing.

(Assuming you are doing videos not live streaming)

The best example I can provide is the channel "Modest Pelican" which I enjoy a LOT.
There are no rules in film-making. Only sins. And the cardinal sin is dullness.
