Video Editing & Creative Software 2021

Context

'Back in the day' when people were looking for a professional, feature-rich video editing solution there was really only one answer on everyone's lips "Adobe Premiere".  Fortunately since then things have changed for the better. There are a lot of players in the market offering high quality software at reasonable prices or in some cases for free.  Free doesn't always mean worse or with fewer features. I've highlighted the free ones in red below so they are easy to find.

Adobe still has excellent offerings, undoubtedly, but their move to a subscription-only model (where previously they offered one-time purchase options) left a lot of us out in the cold. Particularly people like myself who only edit occasionally, and don't earn money from it. The Adobe model is just way too expensive for me to justify.

I've produced a list of many of the Video editing software options – showing the Adobe product and various alternatives.

I've also included other relevant creative software from Adobe and some replacements – audio editing, photo editing, vector graphics and so on.

Choosing your software.

First know that choosing one video editing program over another will not automatically make you a better editor. Video editing is a process, a skill to be learned - that's on you irrespective of the software involved.

Everybody's use case is different. You need to decide whether you want a basic, quick to learn editor with limited features, or an advanced editor with immense capabilities but a steeper learning curve, or something in between.

There is actually no wrong answer, so while a choice may seem daunting there's no need to get overwhelmed. (After all, if you ultimately don't like what you chose you can change).
Have a quick look at what they can do, choose one and start learning how to use it.

YouTube is your friend here with PLENTY of tutorials out there for the popular programs, and most will also have tutorials and manuals on their websites.

I suggest that you start with one of the free options, and build from there.

The following is not a complete list, but covers the bulk of the popular options.

My personal choices, which may or may not align with YOUR needs.

For Video editing: DaVinci Resolve 17

Pros: Free, Available on all platforms, Feature rich (as good as Premiere Pro), an "all in one" solution (video editing, motion graphics, audio editing, colour grading).
Cons: Relatively steep learning curve. Can be demanding on hardware,

For stand-alone Audio editing: A no brainer this one. Grab Audacity. Free, feature rich, widely used., and highly regarded.

For Video capture: grab OBS Studio - Free, feature rich, widely used, highly regarded.

KdenLive (video editing) and Handbrake (transcoding) are also some options.

My Personal, well... choice I guess. Never thought about it because it is given to me by my work. So I in turn pay for it personally, it is very familiar to me.

ADOBE PREMIERE PRO.

I have used exactly 3 editing programs. Microsoft Movie Maker (yes) for a while, goofing on YT, I used a sony product once (I think) and Premiere for 8+ years now it seems. SO for me to truly say it has PRO's or CONS is a bit jaded since I don't know what else is really out there.

PROS: It is an industry standard. Hate to admit it but after 10+ years of working with editing programs it is. Work flow is very good, tons of options for just about everything. If there is not, I guarantee you there is a add-on or plugin for it. Works seamlessly with any other Adobe product.

CONS: Updates are a craps throw. I turn my updates off until I do a little research and make sure they don't farg something up. When things are eskew, it is either fixed immediately or it takes 1200 posts and multiple contacts to the support to get fixed. They remove features you use, and add ones you do not want or like. I mean that is par for the course with huge software companies. But lately (knock on wood), they have been pretty good.

Not much I can say otherwise. I will not be climbing a mountain and telling everyone its amazing, but I will defend it saying it is a good enough product to produce some quality vids.

I really like a guy called Peter McKinnon. He is pretty informative and is easy to listen too... very personable.

You should be able to - within a few minutes  of posting.  There is a grace period.  I had a case on another forum where a member got the irrits and went through and deleted every one of his (good) posts going back 3 years, so....

I can extend the edit time though - what do you think would be reasonable?

A couple hours maybe? I tend to post, then I will think about it, then I will be like, I have to add something or remove something... etc.

Can you have it you can edit it whenever, but delete is limited to 1-2 hours before it is locked down?
